The text makes no claims as to any subsequent contribution to "public progress of the art" of all of the historical observations and experiments described. My intent was to illustrate that many engineers and scientists had recognized the potential value of such devices and pursued many different possible solutions over the years. To avoid any discussion over “invention” vs. “innovation,” I have avoided the use of "invention" in the most recent revision.
